If you live in Mammoth Lakes, June Lake, or anywhere in Mono or Inyo County, here’s important news that can help bring peace of mind after the Pack Fire.
On December 18, 2025, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara issued a formal order requiring insurance companies to keep residential property insurance coverage in place for homeowners affected by the Pack Fire. This order follows the Governor’s emergency declaration on December 9, 2025 and is designed to protect homeowners from losing coverage after a wildfire emergency. California Department of Insurance+1
Under this order:
Insurance companies may not cancel or non-renew residential property insurance due to wildfire risk alone for one year from the emergency declaration date (through December 8, 2026). California Department of Insurance
This applies whether or not you suffered direct fire damage. California Department of Insurance
The protection covers homeowners, condo owners, mobile homeowners, and renters with residential property insurance in the impacted areas. California Department of Insurance
The moratorium specifically applies to properties located in these ZIP Codes affected by the Pack Fire:
93512
93514
93529
93546
If your home is in one of these ZIP Codes, your insurer cannot issue a non-renewal or cancellation based on wildfire risk for the next year (California Department of Insurance).
Many residents in the Eastern Sierra worry about insurance availability after wildfires. Even if you didn’t suffer property damage, insurers sometimes issue non-renewals based on wildfire proximity alone. This moratorium gives homeowners in Mammoth Lakes, June Lake, and nearby communities a critical window of stability where coverage must be maintained. California Department of Insurance
Visit the California Department of Insurance’s moratorium page to check ZIP codes and find additional details:

If you’ve received a non-renewal or cancellation notice due to wildfire risk, contact your insurance company right away and ask for reinstatement.

Wildfire risk continues to affect insurance markets across California, especially in mountain and forest communities. This moratorium gives local homeowners breathing room to stay insured while exploring long-term coverage options or home hardening improvements.
